Mike Soutar Chats with Matt Haycox Funding Guru – FHM, Shortlist Media Ltd & BBC The Apprentice
Today we talk with Mike Soutar the co-founder of Shortlist Media Ltd, the market-leading premium, free magazine publisher. As Chief Executive, Mike led the business to dramatic growth from a five-strong start-up in 2007 to a multi-award-winning enterprise over the next nine years, employing over 160 staff and reaching revenues in excess of £24m per annum. The company’s portfolio includes ShortList, Stylist, Emerald Street and Mr Hyde and straddles print, web, email, large scale live events and international ventures including Stylist France. In 2016, Mike led the sale of the business and has remained as non-executive Chairman.
Over a 30 year career, Mike has worked in a variety of media companies both on the editorial and business side, across print, digital and broadcasting, and in the UK and abroad. Mike’s first job was at DC Thomson in his native Dundee, writing horoscopes and beauty tips. He first rose to prominence as the Editor of Smash Hits in his early 20s and went on to edit FHM in the UK (taking it from 50,000 copy sales a month to over 500,000) and Maxim in America. He also worked in radio, running Kiss FM in London, and served on the Board of IPC for six years, then Britain’s largest publishing company. Shortlist Media appeared in an episode of BBC’s The Apprentice during its 2011 run and Mike has featured as one of Lord Sugar’s advisors in the interview episodes of each of the seven seasons since then.
In 2017 Mike was proud to be the first ever inductee into the PPA Scotland Hall Of Fame.
