Building a personal brand

Why you need one, and how it will boost your success

Here’s question for you: What’s your name? (Let’s start this simply…)

Hopefully you got that right, so the next question is:

What do people think of when they hear your name? Figure this out and you’re getting close to what it means to have a personal brand.

Maybe you think the idea of a personal brand is a load of bullshit; something made up by self-obsessed people to make themselves feel important. The thing is – you already have a personal brand whether you like it or not!

Whether you are a business owner, an entrepreneur or an employee, in everything you do, you’re telling the world something about yourself. People will have an opinion of what you are all about, and it will be based on what you say, what you do, how you do it, and how you make other people feel about it. So like it or not, if you want to succeed, you’ve got to take control of it!

So what is your personal brand saying about you? What would you want it to say?

I’ve recently launched my new Funding Guru brand and website because I’m clear on the people I want to reach, and know what I can offer – which is first hand expertise on all things funding and business growth related.

Even if you don’t have your own business yet, or are just starting out, you need to get clear on who you want to be seen by, and what you want to mean to those people. This is what building your personal brand means, and it’s vital that you do it.

So why bother?

Well, apart from taking control and ACTIVELY choosing how you want to portray yourself, your personal brand is important for two reasons.

  1. Visibility
  2. Building your audience

Whether you’re a one-man band, or a business owner, your reputation will precede you. When you come to actually launching your new enterprise, or expanding, or simply just going for that next role up the ladder, you want people to already have the right impression of what you’re all about. Getting your personal brand right should mean you already have a ready-made audience for what you want to say.

Get it right, success will follow

The people who succeed, whether it’s making money or just getting where they want to be and feeling fulfilled – these people are the ones constantly looking for opportunities. You want opportunities to open up for you? You’ve got to be open. And that means being visible. Sure, there’s a chance someone might stumble across your ten year old facebook page and offer you that dream job or opportunity, but let’s be honest, the chances are small.

If you’re focussed on what you want to achieve, and actively working on being known for it, building your network and visibility in that area, then you’ll find that the magic actually DOES happen. And here’s the secret – it’s not magic! It’s just about being deliberate about who you are, and where you want to be.
